Wide radiation pattern in the midrange – usable from 70 Hz to 3 kHz

The frequency response of the Arcosia 4 shows a smooth, controlled amplitude curve from approximately 70 Hz to 3 kHz – with an 87 dB efficiency rating and a stable level structure across the entire transmission range. Compared to the Arcosia 4 Phase Plug, the classic design with a dust cap has a wider radiation pattern in the upper midrange: Energy is radiated more evenly into the room, resulting in a more generous sweet spot and a more uniform sound distribution throughout the listening space – a benefit for designs where wide radiation behavior and natural sound imaging are the top priorities.

Particularly relevant for DIY speaker developers: The usable transmission range up to approximately 3 kHz allows direct pairing with tweeters with crossover frequencies starting at 2.5–3 kHz – with sufficient safety margin and straightforward filter design using 2nd-order filters. In 3-way systems, the Arcosia 4 handles the midrange starting at approximately 300–500 Hz and passes the low-frequency range to a dedicated woofer. The typical 4" cone breakup occurs above approximately 3 kHz – so the crossover frequency should not be selected to be significantly higher.

The smooth frequency response with no dips or peaks across the transmission range confirms the quality of the drive system and suspension. A driver that sounds as it measures – made at the ETON manufacturing facility in Germany.

Qts 0,39 – flexible for bass reflex and closed enclosures

The impedance curve of the Arcosia 4 demonstrates the performance of a precisely tuned 4-inch midwoofer: The impedance peak occurs at the resonant frequency of approximately 57 Hz (TSP) – a balanced value for a 4-inch driver that delivers genuine low-end response in compact dimensions. The Qts value of 0.39 falls within the boundary range between bass reflex and sealed enclosure tuning, offering maximum flexibility for enclosure design: A sealed enclosure from approximately 4–6 liters delivers controlled, transient-accurate bass reproduction; in a bass reflex enclosure from approximately 6–8 liters tuned to 60–65 Hz, the driver unleashes its full low-end response.

Above the resonant frequency, the driver operates with electrical stability: Impedance only rises moderately toward high frequencies due to the voice coil inductance (Le = 0.35 mH) – a low value attributable to the lightweight CCAW voice coil that simplifies crossover design. Compared to the Arcosia 4 Phase Plug (Le = 0.33 mH), the difference is minimal – both drivers can be designed using the same basic principles. The 8-ohm design enables trouble-free operation with standard HiFi and multi-channel amplifiers.

The cleanly defined impedance peak without parasitic resonances confirms the mechanical precision of the overhung drive system and the quality of the suspension. This 4-inch driver behaves identically in enclosure calculations as it does in simulations – reproducible, reliable, Made in Germany.
