Linear midrange thanks to Phase Plug – usable from 70 Hz to 3.5 kHz

The frequency response of the Arcosia 4 Phase Plug demonstrates what a compact 4"-midwoofer with a phase plug from ETON Manufacturing is capable of: a smooth, controlled amplitude curve from approximately 70 Hz to 3.5 kHz – with 87 dB efficiency and without the typical upper midrange peaks that many 4" drivers without a phase plug exhibit. The phase plug optimizes midrange radiation characteristics and smooths the transition between the piston-driven low-frequency range and the increasingly directional upper midrange – particularly relevant for a 4" driver used in 2-way systems with higher crossover frequencies.

Particularly relevant for DIY developers: The usable frequency range up to approximately 3.5 kHz allows direct pairing with tweeters with crossover frequencies starting at 3 kHz – with ample safety margin and straightforward filter design. In 3-way systems, the Arcosia 4 handles the midrange from approximately 300–500 Hz and passes the low-frequency range to a dedicated woofer. Typical 4" driver directionality sets in above approximately 3 kHz – a physically expected behavior that should be accounted for when selecting crossover frequencies.

The consistent off-axis radiation behavior – made possible by the phase plug – ensures uniform energy distribution throughout the listening space and stable stage imaging even in compact enclosures. A driver that sounds as true to its measured performance as this one – manufactured by ETON in Germany.

Qts 0,39 – flexible for bass reflex and closed enclosures

The impedance curve of the Arcosia 4 shows the behavior of a precisely tuned 4" mid-woofer: The impedance maximum occurs at the resonance frequency of approximately 58 Hz (TSP) – for a 4" driver, this is a balanced value that delivers genuine low-end response in compact dimensions.

The Qts value of 0.39 is the critical design parameter: It sits at the boundary between bass reflex and sealed enclosure tuning, offering maximum flexibility in enclosure design. The equivalent volume of just 6.6 dm³ enables exceptionally compact enclosures – a clear advantage over larger drivers in this class.

Above the resonance frequency, the driver behaves electrically stably: Impedance only rises moderately toward high frequencies due to the voice coil inductance (Le = 0.33 mH) – a very low value attributable to the lightweight CCAW voice coil that simplifies crossover design. The 8-ohm design enables trouble-free operation with standard HiFi and multi-channel amplifiers, in both passive and active setups.

The cleanly defined impedance maximum without parasitic resonances confirms the mechanical precision of the overhung drive system and the quality of the suspension. This 4" driver behaves identically in enclosure calculations as it does in simulations – reproducible, reliable, Made in Germany.
