Phase Plug for controlled radiation behavior – usable from 75 Hz to 3.5 kHz

The frequency response of the Orchestra 4-512 showcases the performance of a 4-inch mid-bass driver with Phase Plug: a smooth, controlled amplitude curve from approximately 75 Hz to 3.5 kHz – with 88 dB efficiency and a stable level response across the entire operating range. The Phase Plug is the key differentiating feature compared to the Orchestra 4-612 without Phase Plug: it optimizes radiation behavior in the upper midrange and enables a slightly higher crossover frequency (up to 3.5 kHz instead of 3 kHz) – a benefit for designs where controlled, low-dispersion radiation and precise spatial imaging are top priorities. The ribbed paper cone (RP) additionally controls spurious harmonic vibrations and stabilizes transient response.

Particularly relevant for DIY loudspeaker developers: The usable operating range of 75 Hz to 3.5 kHz makes the Orchestra 4-512 the most versatile Phase Plug-equipped driver in the Orchestra product lineup.

In the 2-Wege-System it handles the full low and midrange up to approximately 3–3.5 kHz and is paired directly with a tweeter – the compact Vas of 3.7 dm³ enables cabinet sizes starting at approximately 2–5 liters.

In the 3-Wege-System it functions as a dedicated midrange driver between a woofer (crossover starting at approximately 200–400 Hz) and a tweeter (crossover at 3–3.5 kHz). Both drivers – the 4-512 and 4-612 – are enclosure-compatible and can be used in the same cabinet.

The flat frequency response with no dips or peaks in the operating range confirms the quality of the paper RP cone and drive system (BL = 6.0 Tm, 1.15 T). A 4-inch driver with Phase Plug that sounds exactly as it measures – neutral, controlled, precise. Made in Germany, at the ETON manufacturing facility.

Qts 0.32 / fs 80 Hz / Vas 3.7 dm³ – Phase plug for controlled radiation behavior up to 3.5 kHz

The impedance curve of the Orchestra 4-512 shows the performance of a 4" mid-bass driver with Phase Plug and the most compact equivalent volume in the Orchestra product line: The impedance maximum is at approximately 80 Hz (TSP) – slightly higher than with the Orchestra 4-612 without Phase Plug (68 Hz). The Qts value of 0.32 is identical to the 4-612 and offers the same flexibility for enclosure design: Both bass reflex and closed enclosures are possible. The equivalent volume of just 3.7 dm³ is the smallest in the entire Orchestra product line and enables exceptionally compact enclosures starting at approximately 2–5 liters. The Phase Plug reduces thermal compression in the diaphragm center and optimizes radiation behavior in the upper midrange – the impedance behavior itself is nearly identical to the 4-612.

Above the resonance frequency, the driver behaves electrically stably: The impedance only increases minimally at high frequencies due to the voice coil inductance (Le = 0.35 mH) – nearly identical to the 4-612 (Le = 0.36 mH). Both drivers can be designed using the same basic principles and are enclosure-compatible. The 8-ohm design allows trouble-free operation with standard HiFi and multi-channel amplifiers.

The cleanly defined impedance maximum without secondary resonances confirms the mechanical precision of the overhung drive system and the quality of the suspension. A 4" driver that behaves exactly the same in enclosure calculations as it does in simulations – reproducible, reliable, Made in Germany.
