Phase Plug with controlled radiation behavior – 88 dB, usable from 55 Hz to 3 kHz

The frequency response of the Orchestra 5-512 showcases the performance of a 5-inch mid-bass driver with Phase Plug: a smooth, controlled amplitude curve from approximately 55 Hz to 3 kHz – with 88 dB efficiency and a stable level profile across the entire operating range. The Phase Plug is the central feature of the Orchestra 5-512: it optimizes radiation behavior in the upper midrange, reduces thermal compression at the diaphragm center, and enables cleaner integration into 2-way systems with crossover frequencies up to 3 kHz. The ribbed paper diaphragm (RP) additionally controls parasitic vibrations and stabilizes transient response – the result is a flat frequency response without the typical peaks in the upper midrange.

Particularly relevant for DIY speaker builders: The usable operating range of 55 Hz to 3 kHz makes the Orchestra 5-512 the ideal driver for 2-Wege-Systeme with a crossover around 2.5–3 kHz – directly paired with a tweeter, with cabinet volumes from approximately 6–15 liters in bass reflex or sealed enclosure designs. In the 3-Wege-System it functions as a mid-bass driver between a woofer (crossover starting around 150–300 Hz) and a tweeter (crossover at 2.5–3 kHz). The Qts of 0.34 ensures a smooth level drop below the resonant frequency – even in sealed enclosures, the low-end response is not severely limited.

The flat frequency response without dips or peaks across the operating range confirms the quality of the paper RP diaphragm, the Phase Plug, and the drive system (BL = 5.9 Tm, 1.15 T). A 5-inch driver with Phase Plug that sounds as good as it measures – neutral, controlled, precise. Made in Germany, from ETON's manufacturing facility.

Qts 0.34 / fs 59 Hz / Phase Plug – flexible for bass reflex and closed enclosures

The impedance curve of the Orchestra 5-512 shows the behavior of a 5-inch mid-bass driver with a phase plug and high enclosure flexibility: The impedance maximum is at approximately 59 Hz (TSP). The Qts value of 0.34 falls in the boundary range between bass reflex and closed cabinet alignment — both bass reflex and closed enclosures are possible, without the severe bass depth restrictions that come with a low Qts in closed designs. The equivalent volume of 10 dm³ enables compact enclosures starting at approximately 6–15 liters. The phase plug does not affect the impedance behavior itself — its advantage lies in the radiation behavior in the upper midrange and the resulting higher possible crossover frequency up to 3 kHz.

Above resonance, the driver behaves electrically stably: The impedance rises moderately toward high frequencies due to the voice coil inductance (Le = 0.48 mH) — a value expected for a 5-inch driver with a 25-mm copper voice coil on a Kapton former, which does not complicate crossover design. The 8-ohm design enables trouble-free operation with common HiFi amplifiers.

The cleanly defined impedance maximum without spurious resonances confirms the mechanical precision of the overhung drive system and the quality of the speaker suspension. A 5-inch driver with a phase plug that behaves identically in enclosure calculations as it does in simulations — reproducible, reliable, Made in Germany.
