88 dB / Qts 0.36 – usable from 50 Hz to 2.5 kHz, flexible for 2-way and 3-way

The frequency response of the Orchestra 5-612 shows the performance of a 5"-mid-bass driver that fills the gap between the 4"-format (68–80 Hz) and the 8"-subwoofer (26 Hz): a smooth, controlled amplitude curve from approximately 50 Hz to 2.5 kHz – with 88 dB efficiency and a stable level profile across the entire passband. The ribbed paper cone (RP) with an effective radiation area of 80 cm² controls parasitic vibrations in the upper passband and stabilizes cone excursion. The Qts of 0.36 – the highest in the Orchestra product line – is reflected in the frequency response: The level drop below the resonant frequency is gentler than with the other Orchestra drivers with Qts 0.30–0.32, which also makes the 5-612 suitable for sealed enclosures.

Particularly relevant for DIY speaker builders: The usable passband up to approximately 2.5 kHz makes the Orchestra 5-612 the ideal driver for 2-Wege-Systeme with a crossover frequency around 2–2.5 kHz – paired directly with a tweeter, with enclosure volumes from approximately 8–15 liters.

In 3-Wege-System it operates as a mid-bass driver between a subwoofer (crossover starting at approximately 150–300 Hz) and a tweeter (crossover at 2–2.5 kHz). Compared to the 4-612 (usable up to 3 kHz), the upper cutoff frequency is slightly lower – due to the larger cone surface area (80 vs. 55 cm²) and the accompanying earlier beam narrowing.

The smooth frequency response with no dips or peaks across its passband confirms the quality of the paper RP cone and drive system (BL = 5.9 Tm, 1.15 T). A 5"-driver that offers more bass extension than a 4"-format while functioning in compact enclosures – warm, controlled, versatile. Made in Germany, from ETON's manufacturing facilities.

Qts 0,36 / fs 55 Hz / Vas 9,8 dm³ – flexible for bass reflex and sealed enclosures

The impedance curve of the Orchestra 5-612 shows the behavior of a 5" mid-bass driver with the highest Qts value in the Orchestra product line: The impedance maximum is at approximately 55 Hz (TSP) – lower than the 4" drivers (68–80 Hz), but significantly higher than the 8-612 (26 Hz). The Qts value of 0.36 is the core unique selling point of the Orchestra 5-612: It sits in the borderline range between bass reflex and sealed enclosure tuning, thus offering the greatest enclosure flexibility in the Orchestra product line. Unlike the other Orchestra drivers with a Qts of 0.30–0.32 – which are primarily designed for bass reflex setups – the 5-612 also works in sealed enclosures without severe low-frequency response limitations. The equivalent volume of 9.8 dm³ clearly positions it between the 4-612 (4.2 dm³) and the 8-612 (100 dm³).

Above the resonance frequency, the driver behaves electrically stably: The impedance rises moderately toward high frequencies due to the voice coil inductance (Le = 0.44 mH) – slightly higher than with the 4" drivers (Le = 0.35–0.36 mH), but this is an expected value for a 5" driver with a 25-mm copper voice coil on a Kapton former, which does not complicate crossover design. The 8-ohm design allows trouble-free operation with standard HiFi amplifiers.

The cleanly defined impedance maximum with no secondary resonances confirms the mechanical precision of the overhung drive system and the quality of the suspension. A 5" driver that behaves identically in enclosure calculations and simulations – reproducible, reliable, Made in Germany.
